Exclusive Interview with Mark W Brown~ The Perfect Wedding Videographer

Earlier this month, a friend of mine sent me her save the date packaged as a video. As I watched the video and instructions to shoot one, I realised film making was indeed storytelling in art form!

These days, it is quite common to see a videographer looming about in every wedding in the hope of capturing the most memorable snippets of the best day in the newly wed's life. This begs the question: "How does one choose a suitable videographer for the all important day?" Perhaps, I ought to rephrase~"How can one find a videographer that balances talent with creativity so your wedding video does not look like the bog standard one you have been visually punished with since the 80's?" You know, the boring never-ending, bad lighting, awful background music sounding ones! I realised that the perfect video for me, and I am sure I speak for many brides~ art that tells a story!

London-based, videographer Mark Brown, defines the concept through his work, and here, I try to delve deeper into his personality to understand the man behind the magic video camera. One thing is certain, Mark knows how to make your wedding video timeless. His videos are all tastefully shot with a vintage look and feel... almost like a classic film!

"The love of Super-8mm came from travel, being in different places, seeing the sunrise in Tuscany to the sunset in South Carolina. No matter your setting, Super-8 makes it more than beautiful, it makes it enchanting, timeless, authentic. Film creates a depth."

Meet  the delightful Mark Brown

I noticed you recently quit your job and are are now doing this full time. What inspired you to take that leap?

I love to meet people, I love to travel, I love film and I love wedding food :) It didn't take much persuasion

Wedding videos are all very similar these days, but there is something quite refreshing aboutyours. What exactly is it??

I'm a huge fan of West Coast wedding filmmaking. Joel Serrato, SharkPig and Brandon Goodwin completely inspired me with their Super-8mm films. They create something more than a "wedding video", they create art. Something these families will treasure for generations and won't out date itself but get richer in time. This is what I want to achieve with my films, but to do this you have to be completely in love with the format you're using and the people you're filming... otherwise you're setting yourself up for failure. I'm a pretty loving guy ;) I hope that comes across in my films.

When you meet a couple for the first time do you
instantly get a sense of their style?

Always. Even the couples that tell me they are happy for me to do my own thing... everyone has a style. This is very important for me because I want each film to have originality and reflect the couples character. I think this is the downfall for a lot of video companies because they don't take this into account, each film looks the same, it's their way or the highway! I never want my films to look the same, it's their style infused with mine. It's very exciting as each wedding is a new adventure in creativity.

Best tips on choosing a videographer?

I would stay clear of typing wedding videographer into Google search. Your best bet to find the right videographer/filmmaker is to look up the top wedding Blogs in the UK (such as Rocknrollbride.com or omgimgettingmarried.com), they will usually recommend their favorite vendors. This is a little extreme, but I'd also recommend social networking, a lot of brides-to-be are creating Twitter and Facebook profiles that attract both vendors and ex-brides-to-be that can offer a world of useful advice. If all else fails, there's always good old Word Of Mouth! :)

How far in advance will I need to book you?

Sooner the better. I'm already taking bookings for next Summer, but then again, I got a call a few days ago to ask if I was available that weekend and I was!

Finally here's are examples of the genius at work! On behalf of AandR partyUK, I would like to thank Mark for making time to share this with us. Thank you Mark and I hope all of my stylish readers, contact you for a sophisticated wedding video!

Love,
R x
